I have upwards of 100 projects in various stages of incompletion or total abandonment, so you may well find something of interest if you rummage about a bit. I concentrate on solo air and naval wargaming but other 'skirmishy' things quite often pop up out of nowhere, only to disappear again after something else grabs my attention. I even finish the occasional project now and again!Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.comBlogger5895125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-76425271982520554452024-03-17T11:41:00.007+00:002024-03-17T11:42:22.983+00:00Best Laid Plans on the Beach<p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtiQGLpQYHGaJgUxkp1Y5T1V-w0s63ZSZqQNB5dGbsLhVgrePNuLqj-ie8qvwZW2IgrcJyvk3eeJ0SJ0Wb00DyIVSL5WcldfQ1Yw-UcSiWrKTTUv2Fzeix_WtAY2DL8dOSw9tphB65Di_5zFVRnryUwkC5J8egpX8Mj7SAKHLOPWepEV3tYzBdZBMoDv60/s4624/IMG20240317113322.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3468" data-original-width="4624" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtiQGLpQYHGaJgUxkp1Y5T1V-w0s63ZSZqQNB5dGbsLhVgrePNuLqj-ie8qvwZW2IgrcJyvk3eeJ0SJ0Wb00DyIVSL5WcldfQ1Yw-UcSiWrKTTUv2Fzeix_WtAY2DL8dOSw9tphB65Di_5zFVRnryUwkC5J8egpX8Mj7SAKHLOPWepEV3tYzBdZBMoDv60/s320/IMG20240317113322.jpg" width="320" /></a></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I wouldn't blame you if you were thinking that not much has been happening at the workbench over the last week or so. This is due to an avalanche of work related things including an Ofsted inspection, end of term assessments and extra hours, combined with family related distractions involving a visit by my father and a weekend away at the Six Nations rugby match in Cardiff. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">I've also got a horrible chest infection and cold, which has knocked me for six and won't bugger off. All of this has completely scuppered my plan to get the Napoleonic Royal Navy fleet painted by the end of term, so instead I'm going to take the models with me on holiday and paint them in Brittany, perhaps even squeezing in a game or two of Nick Jones excellent rules, albeit with unfinished ships. Sounds like a plan!</p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-73487133675673306842024-03-17T07:36:00.004+00:002024-03-17T07:36:59.933+00:00Happy Saint Patrick's Day <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwukSyBP4lT9WiF0zpf7QO2Vv9CLl11qDMHOytjMc_MeAikeSGxDxYJlRs8P2o1vPX1vvTfVXfiJSetUeQVIWQAhJSUxj9DSJ8pt9R3dNkYrSmxXBN1hJej7Pkdt7l4qWU4GSM1LepDdakHERjvDN0s02uezWqr3MtERi5DRCtMETpaSkPoNvy70MOQR_s/s600/156_1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="407" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwukSyBP4lT9WiF0zpf7QO2Vv9CLl11qDMHOytjMc_MeAikeSGxDxYJlRs8P2o1vPX1vvTfVXfiJSetUeQVIWQAhJSUxj9DSJ8pt9R3dNkYrSmxXBN1hJej7Pkdt7l4qWU4GSM1LepDdakHERjvDN0s02uezWqr3MtERi5DRCtMETpaSkPoNvy70MOQR_s/w271-h400/156_1.jpg" width="271" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-46326173994753404632024-03-16T15:32:00.005+00:002024-03-16T16:20:46.440+00:00The Beagle Conflict <p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXg5Ht1h4u_wI6SmLL0wjVIUFUfWLMGim9zbX-SLtFDarfsCL0Q2rtvU1OterPLfjt3H-uWDmibMqc4yks3aEu9Rhl6CzJ2pAcSK7QupgY2wDpz07A7_1avhQn1Nw28kcNKZ1-8AIAJEokZh8mEGZm_nB0jIdt3JcUZWwgRh5weU2VdWeSxrAKxhU_H-EM/s495/helion1001449.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="495" data-original-width="350" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXg5Ht1h4u_wI6SmLL0wjVIUFUfWLMGim9zbX-SLtFDarfsCL0Q2rtvU1OterPLfjt3H-uWDmibMqc4yks3aEu9Rhl6CzJ2pAcSK7QupgY2wDpz07A7_1avhQn1Nw28kcNKZ1-8AIAJEokZh8mEGZm_nB0jIdt3JcUZWwgRh5weU2VdWeSxrAKxhU_H-EM/s320/helion1001449.jpg" width="226" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDRExIPSF6z8KER9cV_PYKTqWMzk8LQTKCrYDTgSHmxDTfqLUzdDTr1-qA0GoGdpS9C-XvrSWwxm01m-aufQy62wB_T5S_kp3ZXl5nvKuPxyyu0zkGdkyqep-XDPf_0npQaEPtwFT3yrSElyI-ABt6nwZAZmvEVp3KzDkuZswVr_xnSJIc0S8t_6PS-PX/s225/helion1000748.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="225" data-original-width="207" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDRExIPSF6z8KER9cV_PYKTqWMzk8LQTKCrYDTgSHmxDTfqLUzdDTr1-qA0GoGdpS9C-XvrSWwxm01m-aufQy62wB_T5S_kp3ZXl5nvKuPxyyu0zkGdkyqep-XDPf_0npQaEPtwFT3yrSElyI-ABt6nwZAZmvEVp3KzDkuZswVr_xnSJIc0S8t_6PS-PX/w294-h320/helion1000748.jpg" width="294" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Another of the excellent Helion Publishing Latin America at War titles just added to the library. I've had an interest in this conflict for 'What If?" naval wargaming but I'm also thinking of branching out into the air warfare side of things as well.</p><p>Here's the blurb: </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The Beagle conflict was a territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile over the determination of the layout of the eastern mouth of the Beagle Channel, which affected the sovereignty of the islands located south of the channel, and east of Cape Horn and its adjacent maritime spaces.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The first antecedents of the conflict date back to 1888, seven years after the signing of the Treaty of Limits. In 1901, the first Argentine map appeared in which some of the islands in question were drawn as within Argentina’s control. Despite the small size of the islands, their strategic value between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans caused a long conflict between the two South American states that went on for much of the 20th century, causing a number of ‘minor’ incidents, and almost culminating in a major war.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The conflict focused on the dispute over the sovereignty of the islands and the oceanic rights generated by them to Chile, but it was not limited exclusively to these islands.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Volume 1 of The Beagle Conflict mini-series covers the origins of the dispute and border clashes between the two countries from the time of the independence of Chile and Argentina from the Spanish Crown, until early 1978, and is illustrated with original photographs, custom-drawn artworks and maps.</p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-88913714985132883362024-03-15T18:51:00.003+00:002024-03-15T18:52:13.897+00:00Arena of Blood Preorder<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif-BbkRk43yuxyUcJRXWhxB8bxZvjDXMnVkCMaICPFGoF7EE3RtvcMvg2qhZ-O_39yYFC05TwURS3lOKwIfSNvQ882alqVTBA-QRvRAn3-j0W4sm5GHTKd9fcQxg5bux9wyY5iT5-SLwWc4Y33f6wgYM8wNxXofQQxBAWnwQkey6IXrtu9VttBA-v1bLd4/s1393/IMG_20240315_183255.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1393" data-original-width="940" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif-BbkRk43yuxyUcJRXWhxB8bxZvjDXMnVkCMaICPFGoF7EE3RtvcMvg2qhZ-O_39yYFC05TwURS3lOKwIfSNvQ882alqVTBA-QRvRAn3-j0W4sm5GHTKd9fcQxg5bux9wyY5iT5-SLwWc4Y33f6wgYM8wNxXofQQxBAWnwQkey6IXrtu9VttBA-v1bLd4/w270-h400/IMG_20240315_183255.jpg" width="270" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">There's a special preorder discount on the new <i>Arena of Blood</i> gladiatorial rules, which means a long, long week at work can be finished off with a spot of retail therapy. I've ordered a section of ten figures to use as a patrol in a counter factual 'imaginations' type setting akin to my 15mm Sandbox Skirmish project, making use of the resin Humber Pigs from Warbases that I already have in the bits box. Nonetheless, I expect to be seriously outgunned so I've been thinking of ways to boost the Bolshevik's anti-armour firepower without having to paint up any new infantry or cavalry units. I have hit on a cunning plan, which involves hiring an arms dealer character using the campaign rules, allowing me to deploy an additional field gun. This will require a model to be built and painted, which isn't too much trouble as I have one in the spares box. All I need is some Humbrol Grass Green spray to basecoat it with and I'll be able to get cracking!</p><p></p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-61907655011752902812024-03-06T13:46:00.006+00:002024-03-06T18:16:16.133+00:00Submarine Safari <p style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkxiGWVBKIcSlioUrOuVmCMG4vdV4jLM35UIt_qb2kKmVgBKGXkVQxglvoBvzd7kJ8LOrasdxu2yQtoZNGHrrSbed2bUN4_sQHfwDyxZQQkIYbyZ_xXRGnvHxTSGr0u7cRJJIuqoaQoN0kAv4jTLZxwT0uuHic6N_MgBcubF_oxf1G9g0UXQEdTwEL4gU/s400/unnamed.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="296" data-original-width="400" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkxiGWVBKIcSlioUrOuVmCMG4vdV4jLM35UIt_qb2kKmVgBKGXkVQxglvoBvzd7kJ8LOrasdxu2yQtoZNGHrrSbed2bUN4_sQHfwDyxZQQkIYbyZ_xXRGnvHxTSGr0u7cRJJIuqoaQoN0kAv4jTLZxwT0uuHic6N_MgBcubF_oxf1G9g0UXQEdTwEL4gU/s320/unnamed.jpg" width="320" /></a></p><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">The <i>Saurian Safari</i> game last night went down very well, so I'm thinking of reviving my underwater prehistoric hunting plans using the <i>Submarine</i> <i>Safari</i> variant originally published in Wargames Illustrated. Two of these are the CF909 2500 ton tramp steamer and the other a CF907 3000 ton tramp steamer, as these are both nice models and pretty generic, so suitable for both sides. I'll tart them up with some sturdy wire masts and derricks, add some gribblies to make them a bit different and paint them up in a nice shade of rusty bucket!</p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-25480163645027361662024-03-02T11:30:00.008+00:002024-03-02T16:21:47.141+00:00Royal Navy Channel Squadron Reinforcements<p style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYHRtLMIFTqzPQrTC1nvH2ScfoyjW4kBhykCxgM9RQ7Itc2f1-57JHCZwb9GWaOzaFVAWuY-yDlaC16TJxvaOAcgJX7jSPCGO1uX0s5duMM794Lh6jN6wHXdl4C4OtffkL9srkgQrdzSnAVfamLFI4glgIbTgkWOsXlKEfjjHL4-ReBcX3TePg79sVTrN6/s4624/IMG20240302112553.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3468" data-original-width="4624" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYHRtLMIFTqzPQrTC1nvH2ScfoyjW4kBhykCxgM9RQ7Itc2f1-57JHCZwb9GWaOzaFVAWuY-yDlaC16TJxvaOAcgJX7jSPCGO1uX0s5duMM794Lh6jN6wHXdl4C4OtffkL9srkgQrdzSnAVfamLFI4glgIbTgkWOsXlKEfjjHL4-ReBcX3TePg79sVTrN6/s320/IMG20240302112553.jpg" width="320" /></a></p><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I thought my Napoleonic squadron was looking a little feeble this morning, so I've quickly added three more ships of the line, a fourth rate 64, a third rate 74 and a third rate 80, bringing the total to twelve plus the 98 gun second rate flagship. This month, I've gone for a special offer from Eureka Miniatures, which is a platoon sized unit of ZANLA guerillas from their modern African range. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">These are lovely figures but a bit more expensive than your average 28mm stuff, so I didn't opt for them for the <i>Sandbox Skirmish</i> project, choosing the less well sculpted but cheaper Commando Miniatures range instead. Now, those will be used for Borneo, while the Eureka figures will be deployed for the imaginations post-colonial project, set in a fictional East African territory in the 1960's. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The other half of the conflict will use the Eureka Miniatures British figures for Aden, relocated to East Africa. These will go well with the vehicles I've already acquired. I might also get some of the French Foreign Legion range, which is equally cool. The overall aim is to make maximum use of the excellent modular terrain that my old wargaming friend gave me a few weeks ago, which is crying out for some post colonial squad level skirmish action. </p>Jim Jackamanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060774784000500705.post-32547885251016839392024-02-29T19:09:00.003+00:002024-02-29T19:09:25.026+00:00Back to the Back of Beyond <p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimxel4y4st1sGQD9qd9lhcUpIMMwOwXog1-Be2PxUsZL92ooyH1PdIda7i6SJ4TzlP024_0tznon2dLKjHQ4zxSSOt1pZ90B17TwcQFaQUgc_N3eMSH4dsTMT8xfsrpGXlkPCu9XtVtAigPK4l2TZ_u3measq_6EjsPyenU2vrJNODwLGv_f2mmh2nhzWW/s320/789030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="320" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimxel4y4st1sGQD9qd9lhcUpIMMwOwXog1-Be2PxUsZL92ooyH1PdIda7i6SJ4TzlP024_0tznon2dLKjHQ4zxSSOt1pZ90B17TwcQFaQUgc_N3eMSH4dsTMT8xfsrpGXlkPCu9XtVtAigPK4l2TZ_u3measq_6EjsPyenU2vrJNODwLGv_f2mmh2nhzWW/s1600/789030.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Out of the blue I have some how ended up with a game of <i>Contemptible Little</i> <i>Armies</i> in the Back of Beyond at the end of next month. Needless to say, my project plans have been thrown into the air again and I'll be making space for some Tumbling Dice 1/2400th scale French and British warships of the late 1870's to mid-1880's, a good selection of which I originally based a few years ago. Following up on this, we've opted to give the Long Face Games <i>Narrow Seas</i> fast play rules a spin, with the focus on some scenarios for the East Coast and North Sea c1941-42. I have everything for this but will need to paint up a convoy of merchant shipping and a few escorts if we like the rules and want to take it beyond simple encounter / interception type games.
