USS Miantonomoh visits Portsmouth 1866 |
I've just been painting up half a dozen 1/2400th scale Tumbling Dice monitors for the commission job, which were pretty straightforward but look not too bad. This set me off on another tangent, at the end of which I've decided to create a 'what if?' United States Navy ironclad squadron, for use as a third force in my Broadside and Ram counterfactual naval wargaming. I've been playing lots of French vs. Royal Navy scenarios but fancy something a little bit different.

There are several suitable models in the Tumbing Dice range, including USS Roanoke (1), USS Dictator (2), USS Monandnock (4) and USS Kalamazoo (4), the numbers in brackets indicating the number in each class, some of which were in service after the Civil War and some of which were built but never launched. The Tumbling Dice models aren't always accurate in dimensions or details but they're still nice sculpts and quick to paint up too.

This lot would give me a powerful ironclad force, either for coastal defence or at a push even for service on the other side of the Atlantic, either in alliance with the French or the British. I can also add some conventional screw frigate and corvettes to bulk out the squadron, using some of the other models in the ASV range. I quite like this idea and it wouldn't take me long to assemble, paint and get into action on the table?
Check out Shipways on Facebook. They do a range of ACW ships and river boats as well
