Tumbling Dice 1/2400th Chile Peru Review


I got home yesterday to find a parcel from Tumbling Dice containing some of the new 1/2400th scale ships for the 1879 War of the Pacific. Here's a quick review.

Huascar

This is a new sculpt replacing the old one from the ASV61 pack. This is a lovely model and has a separate foremast so that you can add it or leave it off, which is great for modelling the Huascar in it's different stages. It also doesn't have any sails moulded on to the casting. *****



Independencia

This is also a replacement for the old model in the ASV61 pack. It's clearly more like the actual ship than the previous model and doesn't have the overscale separate ratlines. On the downside, the sails are moulded onto the foremast and bowsprit. ****



Screw Sloop

This is a replacement model for the ASV11 sloop, which was a nice sculpt, but designed to be more like the O'Higgins, Chacobuca, Esmerelda et al. It's a nice model but with the foresail moulded on again. I'm not sure if the old ASV11 casting will reappear as a different code but I hope it hasn't been retired just yet. *** (I wonder if it is now the ASV15 Screw Corvette?)

Heavy Gunboat

Although now listed as ASV18 this is actually the old ASV15 Screw Corvette. A nice model ****


Manco Capac and Atahualpa

These are two new models of the Peruvian monitors and they are very nice too, even if a little slim compared to the actual ships. They could also be used as monitors for the Swedish or Russians in the Baltic, with the Manco Capac looking a lot like the Uragan class and the Atahualpa bearing a close resemblance to the John Ericson class or the Norwegian Skorpionen. ****

    Thanks for posting these pictures Jim. They are an improvement for sure, but I’m not sure that I’ll go to the bother of buying the models.

    Thanks for this post - no pics on TD site so they are very useful. Do you have these painted?...any pics?

    I am looking to get a good selection of 1879 ships...do you think the two starter packs will do the job or will extras need to be added?

      The packs are a good place to start and have most of he ships you'll need.

    Great job.

    Your blog splash pic is pretty sweet also. What are you using for your ‘sea mat’?. ..it scales well for 1/2400.
