A bit more digging around turned up these cracking reconstruction images of the arena at Caerleon (Isca) which is the sort of thing I'm after, although a bit too sophisticated to scratchbuild. The timber seating stands could be simplified though and provide a good idea of the structural elements of an earlier timber arena, which is what I'm going to try to construct, rather than a later stone building.

I've been thinking of doing something in a similar style for a multi-purpose Gladiator Arena and Blood Bowl stadium!
