Mexican Revolution Solution?

It's turning out to be not as easy as I thought when trying to source figures for the Mexican Revolution, which you'd think would be well covered given the iconic associations and feature film tie ins. Anyway, it's been a bit of a struggle finding what I'm looking for, especially in the smaller scales of 10mm and 15mm, which I think would be the perfect way to go.

In 10mm there's some stuff in the Pendraken ranges which could be used but too many holes and gaps that need to be filled (there's a good post about this on Doctorphalanx's excellent blog)

In 15mm, there's just tumbleweed gently rolling across the scene, with even Irregular Miniatures looking a bit sparse, although someone on TMP did suggest some Freikorps options.

In 20mm the outlook is much brighter with dedicated and expanding ranges from Shellhole Scenics, and Early War Miniatures, together with some relevant stuff from Tumbling Dice and the aforementioned Irregular Miniatures ranges.

In 28mm there's a really nice but quite limited range from Brigade Games and a very good  range from Old Glory. The former is, however, off the cards as it would require ordering from the US, which is not an option due to Mr Customs and Excise.

I haven't made up my mind yet, although I have got a couple of starter packs from Shellhole Scenics as a first foray into 20mm. The figures are good and I'm sure will paint up well but they're not really what I'm after. I'd like to go for 15mm but it looks like that's not a runner while Old Glory 28mm is a possibility but at a much greater outlay.

Still, there's no rush and plenty of time to find the best solution, so in the meantime I'm cracking on with my desert terrain, the Back of Beyond Chinese Warlord army and a few mini-projects along the way. I'm thinking about doing one of these over the weekend, time permitting, so the Mexican Revolution will have to wait!

  1. I've got unpainted 15mm planned for Mexican revolution; a mix of Peter Pig & Freikorps 15. The latter have some very useful figures buried in various ranges. The Spanish American war has some that just need a paint conversion, with lots of Mexican irregulars in the 2x Mexican ranges. Peter Pig has heads, Inc sombreros! The Wild West & WW1 have useful bits; Mexican bandits, French & Belgian mgs.
French 75s work as Schneider Canet.
If you want particular recommendations let me know.

  2. Have you considered Pulp Figures' new 28mm Mexican Revolution range? North Star stock them.

It may be that you've considered and dismissed them - I'm coming into the conversation a little late.

  3. North Star also stock the Brigade Games figures, so no need to involve HMC after all!

  5. Yes the Brigade figures are nice but out of stock for months. Good for skirmish games but limited for bigger battles. Gringo 40's have some excellent figures too, so maybe gunfight style skirmish would be a way forward?

  7. Thanks Neil...I may well do just that.

  8. The Pulp figures would also be great for gunfight games.

  9. Thanks for covering this, the Mexican Revolution has been on my wargaming wishlist for years, but was never quite sure how I'd do it

  10. If you are in Europe (the mention of Customs & Excise suggests UK,,?) then look no further than Andy at OGUK for Old Glory.

Also in 20mm there's the Jacklex range, which is my favourite of the lot.

  11. I've also been looking half-heartedly at scales larger than 10mm but completely missed the 20mm Shellhole Scenics range until I saw your post, so thanks for the discovery.

I see your enquiry about compatibility with Early War Miniatures on TMP didn't get any response, but have you learnt anything elsewhere?

In any event, the Shellhole range looks very comprehensive in its own right and certainly has a lot of character. If I could bring myself to do 20mm it would seem to offer an ideal solution.

The armies I have in mind are not large (and thus not too burdensome to paint), but I'm concerned that larger figures would impact on base sizes and thus on the need for a relatively larger playing surface.

But like you, I'm in no rush.
