Heller HMS Theseus for Korea

The kit bits and bobs including decal sheet

TD Sea Fury for scale effect

Nice box art too!

I managed to track down a Heller kit of HMS Colossus in 1/1600th scale via eBay, to use as HMS Theseus alongside 1/600th scale Tumbling Dice aircraft, for MiG Alley, Bag the MiG and possibly even Wings over Suez. The idea is to assemble it as a waterline model on a textured sea base, then use it as a visual prop to represent a Royal Navy light fleet carrier lying way off shore. The kit comes with a decal sheet for the deck markings, so all I would need to do is glue it together, paint it up and add the decals together with two big 'T' identification letters on the flight deck. I'm really quite pleased with this find and think it will look brilliant!

  1. I find waterlining ship kits a fairly traumatic experience so hopefully you are better at it than I am. I have found a few useful guidelines though.
    Don’t use a bandsaw.
Don’t glue the hull together before you start. Though I did clamp it together to draw a line round it to follow with the saw. I do wonder about putting a piece of masking tape round it as well to make the line easier to see and to possibly make the cutting a little easier and reduce the risk of cutting where you shouldn’t. Also as I used at various times a Sharpie and a wax pencil to mark the line it eliminates having to remove the remnants of the line after you have cut.
The model aircraft fraternity use Dymo tape as a guide when scribing lines so I wonder if this might be useful? This would be a better option on a fairly plain hull like your CVL rather than something with planning and a lot of detail moulded on. If it works a plastic cutter would be a nice way to do the cutting.
Use a razor saw or similar.

  2. Thanks for the tips Michael...it is a bit tricky but I'm hoping to cut the hull sides down first then lightly (and carefully) sand them to the right height.

    Fingers crossed!
