I too have been suckered into buying a copy of the latest edition of Wargames llustrated by the free sprue of S Boats on the cover. This has to be the oldest marketing trick in the book but it works. The models are really nice, however, so it's probably worth the £4.50 if you factor in the magazine content too.
I'm not convinced by the scale and already have an extensive collection of 1/600 scale boats for coastal warfare, so I'm not intending to take the plunge into Cruel Seas. I will stick it on the Xmas list though, as the starter set would be a nice present to open and my boys would probably really enjoy playing it.
You and me both, though I just bought the rulebook when Warlord had the free shipping over 20 Pounds deal last month. I'll stick to my 1/600 and 1/700 stuff as well.

ReplyDeleteI've ordered the issue from Sarissa (since my LFGS hadn't manage to get hold of it) and I plan to use the boats as targets in Blood Red Skies :-)
ReplyDeleteYes I know they are slightly smaller scale, but since they are supposed to be below the planes I think it will work nicely.
Good idea...I was thinking of the same but for Bag the Hun and 1/300th scale aircraft at ultra low level. I have some plans for a historical scenario for this, with Westland Whirlwinds shooting up E Boats in Brittany!
ReplyDeleteThe S boats anot bad and come in close to 1/300 for their 110' length for the late version. They match very well with the Heroics and Ross 1/300 boats. My gripe is with the appallingly poor masts on the Vospers. Who sculpted them? they are too thick, too tall, wrong shape....
ReplyDeleteI had a look at the Vospers in WHSmiths and thought exactly the same thing. The hulls also looked too wide in he beam to me as well.
