Lake Tanganyika Useful Links

Alexandre Delcommune
Netta?
Cecil Rhodes
Baron Dhanis

As well as reading Mimi and Toutou Go Forth and The Phantom Flotilla, both of which are really interesting, I've been doing some web trawling for useful sources of information. There are several really good sites if you do a simple Google search, so I'm sure they will be familiar. However, one I have found that's off the beaten track is this one:

.....which includes photographs, dimensions and armament for most of the Belgian craft on Lake Tanganyika at the time. This is really good for model conversion and scratch building for a start, as well as being a valuable resource on the various activities that the Belgians got up to, or not as the case may be.

  1. Tumbling Dice make nice 1:600 scale models of all the vessels for the Tanganyika campaign if you don't want to scratch build.

  2. Ah! I realise I'm out of date with your blog as I see in earlier posts that you have all the TD vessels and are looking to scratch build those they don't produce - sorry!

  3. I'd be a little suspicious of the accuracy of that site - that picture of the Netta is definitely not the Netta! It's either Mimi or Toutou. Do you have a copy of 'River Gunboats' by Branfill-Cook? It's probably the most trustworthy source. Both Foden and Shankland seem to get things wrong regarding armament (Shankland even contradicts himself!) I'm still unclear what guns Hedwig was carrying when she was sunk. You might find this account from the German perspective useful: https://www.oocities.org/cdferree/tanganjikasee/tangan.html

    1. Yes I had my doubts too. A second photo on the same page clearly isn't, so why they chose that one as the main image is very strange. I'm thinking of using a cut down 80' motor launch for the Netta or perhaps a modified General Service launch. Thanks for the book reference and the link...I'll follow them up.
