I'm now going to have a go at the sister ship to USS Choctaw, the very similar but slightly different river ironclad, USS Lafeyette. This should be easier as there is no forward casemate to build but still a challenge due to the paddle boxes, which have concave curved surfaces joining them to the superstructure. I have worked out the correct scale length (36mm) and width (6mm) this time, so I won't end up with an overscale model, having also found a spare metal base of the correct dimensions. This was what mucked it up yesterday, as I matched the hull to the base not the other way round!
