I need an ironclad for my Union flotilla, the Tumbling Dice City class being a bit crude, the Brown Water Navies and Panzerschiffe equivalents being way too expensive due to the hefty postage. As a result, I'm going to have a crack at a scratchbuilt USS Choctaw, which is a real challenge to construct as it consists of a series of complex curved, angled and sloped pieces. I have a spare metal base to use as a jig for assembly but will make the hull and superstructure from plastic card. If it works, which is a pretty big if, I may well have a go at scratch building some more river craft including some tinclads and cotton clads.
Best of luck with that one! You might want to try modeling clay for the hull at least.
ReplyDeleteGood idea
DeleteGood luck on this project Jim. Have you checked the 3D printing option. I’m sure that there’s an ACW gamer who has created an stl file for these ships. At least here in Canada it’s relatively easy to find a printer to do up the model for you - libraries often have them.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes US international shipping is waaay too much. It’s much cheaper to order from the UK to Canada than to order from US suppliers.
I've thought about that and may have a way to do it, just need some suitable files.
DeleteAfter that one the rest will be easy, best of luck!
