Thud Ridge Tankers

In Thud Ridge the USAF player can deploy tanker aircraft for re-fueling, with the suggested model being the B-47 Stratojet. This wasn't used as a tanker in the Vietnam war, so I decided to try to find something more appropriate. It was a happy coincidence that Remi posted about the Schabak diecast airliner range on his excellent blog 1/600th Aircrafts available on the market – Load And Return (wordpress.com) which gave me the idea to look for a Boeing 707 model to use as a KC-135 Stratotanker.

The Schabak models are collectible so can be quite expensive, but I found one for a tenner plus postage, which isn't too much of a hit to the wallet as I only need one of them. It shouldn't be difficult to modify it into a tanker, with the undercarriage cut off and a re-fueling probe added to the back, although it really should have a shorter length fuselage. I think it will look pretty cool. A big 'merci' to Remi for the idea!

  1. I'm glad my article inspired you! I have quite a few ideas that are a bit out of the usual scope, they are not always good but if it helps others then that's really cool!

Some Schabak models are very affordable and the shipping costs are often the most expensive. I found a DC-10 for 3 euros!

I am also looking into the option of 3D printing with the help of Gerard-Jan and I think there are some very interesting things to do on that side.I'm going to write an article about it soon and I think you might be interested in it #vietnameratanker :p!
