I have now added some 1/2400th Spanish pre-dreadnoughts from Tumbling Dice to my overloaded lead pile of shipping, with a view to doing the Span-Am War, or at least the Battle of Santiago de Cuba at some point in the future using Broadside and Salvo or Tsushima. It's a relatively small fleet, mainly consisting of the four armoured cruisers and a couple of unarmoured cruisers, together with the battleship Pelayo, which didn't take an active role in the war, as well as three torpedo boat destroyers as escorts. Just enough to run a small cruiser action or similar, so a nice little extension to the project.
A good campaign for 'What ifs...' The US feared the possibility of the Spanish fleet commerce raiding and/or bombarding targets along the East Coast since American coastal defences weren't adequate at the time.
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of the Admiralty Trilogy Monroe's Legacy What If? scenario supplement, which has all sorts of clashes involving the US fleet and various opponents. Very exciting possibilities!
ReplyDeleteAnd you have of course got Mr Manley's excellent "A Splendid Little War"? The whole thing feels a bit one-sided if you take it historically but as you say there are lots of options if you start adding in other powers!
