I'm pretty sure these are meant as ground support for 28mm VBCW gaming but, I thought to myself, why take the obvious next step and turn it into a full blown aerial combat set up.
I have a load of suitable 1/72nd scale interwar or early 1940's aircraft kits in the loft waiting for an excuse to be built. Some are old Matchbox, Smer or Heller kits whilst others are obscure KP or Novo models. Together with the re-issued Airfix and Matchbox (Revell) kits now being produced, a few of which you can see above, there is no shortage of suitable planes to fly around in.
As for rules, my immediate thought was Airwar:1918, although this has yet to be re-issued in a new edition. There are plenty of other rules options, either free downloads or low cost pdf's to keep the price tag down to something reasonable.
I'll have to think about this a bit more....

Another reason to get that 2nd edition out! The good thing is that it does have stats for a lot of aircraft up to 1930 (I have an itch to go Gran Chaco someday) so it should be quite useful for VBCW...
