Painting 1/2400th Ironclads

A couple of weeks ago I was asked about a 'how to?' for painting the Tumbling Dice 1/2400th scale ironclads, so here's a quick run through, in this case for the warships of the Royal Navy:

1. Assemble the models including the sails, bases etc.

2. Undercoat with matt or satin black spray paint (I use Halfords)

3. Base coat the bases with Vallejo Dark Sea Blue or similar.

4. Block in the sails with Army Painter Skeleton Bone.

5. Block in the decks with Vallejo US Field Drab.

6. Block in the masts with Flames of War Light Brown.

7. Block in the ratlines with Vallejo Leather Brown.

8. Block in the funnels with Flames of War Light Brown.

9. Block in the boats and boot topping with Vallejo Matt White.

10. Give it an all over wash.

(I use my own mix of GW Nuln Oil, GW Seraphim Sepia / Chestnut drawing ink, Water and a splash of Future but Army Painter washes would probably do)

11. Highlight the sails in Vallejo Pale Sand.

12. Highlight the decks in Vallejo US Tan Earth.

13. Highlight the masts in 50:50 Vallejo Medium Flesh Tone / Flames of War Light Brown.

14. Highlight the boot topping and boats in Vallejo Matt White.

15. Paint the inside of the boats in Vallejo Leather Brown.

16. Wet and Dry brush  the bases in Foundry Union Blue, Union Blue Light and Vallejo Sky Blue.

17. Add a wake and bow wave with Vallejo Matt White.

18. Basecoat varnish with artist's matt or satin varnish.

19. Add a top coat on the ship with Army Painter Anti-Shine matt varnish.

20. Add a base label.

Have a cup of tea.

  1. Although it wasn't me asking this time, I do enjoy when you tell how you do things. It's of tremendous help when first going into the hobby / or a new part of the hobby. Cheers!

  2. No problem. I haven't got all the answers but this way seems to produce OK results without too much of a headache.
