South American Post Pre-dreadnought Projects

Sao Paulo

I've now played out the mini-campaign with my Chilean and Argentinian pre-dreadnoughts, which was the original aim of the project, so I can draw a line under that one and move on. However, I still have a few riverine monitors, coastal battleships and torpedo boats to paint to finish off the last of the Tumbling Dice models that are available for the South American nations c1900. These I will probably leave until more are available, specifically the protected and armoured cruisers that are currently missing in action. I produced a list of these for Paul at Tumbling Dice, as well as some extra models for Brazil and Peru, but as yet only the Chilean protected cruiser Chacabuco has made it off the stocks.

In the meantime, I'm going to go in one of two directions for South American naval wargaming, the first being the Chincha Islands War between Spain and an alliance of Chile and Peru, which is a continuation of my previous War of the Pacific ironclad project, with the Spanish fleet being the main element of the project. There are suitable models for this in the Tumbling Dice range including a proxy for the Spanish ironclad flagship, Numancia. The second option is the dreadnought naval arms race between Brazil and Argentina, with the inclusion of the Chileans as a third party, this time in 1/3000th scale using Navwar models. I will probably opt for this, as a change of scale and a chance to try out some WW1 rules is something that would be good fun, especially as I can use aircraft and submarines for a change!
