I have now got a second hand 1/600th Peter Pig scale resin model of Fort Sumter via eBay for use with ACW ironclad coastal games, which cost me a tenner less than the full asking price. It was too good to miss, so my long term plan to wargame ACW riverine and coastal actions is one step closer to happening, although I've been saying that to myself for years. At least I now have something to aim for, quite literally!
It's a good scale for Dahlgren and Columbiad but, if I started again I'd probably go for 1/1200th scale, as there's a lot more choice for about the same price if you avoid the most expensive ranges. I actually used to have some old Navwar ACW models in 1/1200th scale, which I painted to pretty good standard, but these were given away ages ago to a friend. I'd prefer the Spithead or Langton Miniatures ranges now but the latter are very expensive, even compared to Peter Pig's 1/600th scale stuff, so it's really not an option.
I've also been thinking about a riverine campaign using the Messing About on the River system but that would be a bit too much to do in a larger scale, so I think it'll be easiest and most affordable to set up in 1/2400th scale, despite the limited availability of models. It does have the advantage that the terrain would be more manageable and I can also convert and scratch build the various gunboats, transports and ironclads I need out of plastic card, which I really enjoy doing.
