Bag the Hun Franco Thai War 1941

I have a new Bag The Hun project to follow on from my very enjoyable foray into the Khalkhin Gol incident, this time a similarly obscure but very interesting excursion to Indochina. This time, I'm planning to write a series of scenarios for the Franco Thai War in 1941, which has some really interesting aircraft and a number of potential dogfights that would be excellent as the basis for games. I'm only just starting on the background reading and research for this but have already located a number of very good sources online, including these:

The Franco-Thai War - Pacific Eagles

Warfare History Blog: Franco-Thai War: The Indochina Micro Campaign, 1940-1941 (warfarehistorian.blogspot.com)

It's looking like a project with a lot of potential, with most if not all of the aircraft available in 1/600th scale from Tumbling Dice, although there's only limited options in 1/300th scale from Collectair, Heroics and Ros and Raiden Miniatures. The scenarios would also only involve a relatively small number of aircraft, so more than manageable for solo play. Excellent!

  1. Do it in 1:600, but... putting the spatted undercarriage on those Hawks is hell :)

  2. Yep, I think that's the best option by far. Have to do a proxy for the Ki-30 but I'm sure that's do-able.

  3. Ki51 Sonya? or use a Kate and add undercarriage

  4. I was thinking of using a modified Kate, as you suggested, as I have a few spare from another project and the Ki-51 doesn't look right.

  5. Loving your projects Jim, all sorts of goofy interwar aircraft in this one.

  7. Thinking of using the Fokker DXXI as a proxy for the Curtiss Hawk?

  8. Looking forward to seeing this progress! FYI, the best English-language book on the subject remains Aerial Nationalism, though if you read French there's L'Aviation Francaise en Indochine that's simply unbeatable.

  9. Yes Fokker XXI would work in 1:600

    1. I have compared them together and they're virtually indistinguishable...save a lot of hassle adding wheels!
