I'm working on my 1/600th scale Eastern Front tanks for Armoured Storm at the moment, which are going to be used to learn the rules, but I'm planning to scale up to 1/300th scale afterwards. I was thinking of the Western Desert or Barbarossa for this but think it would be more interesting to do Khalkin Gol in 1939. I have played a lot of Bag the Hun games set during the conflict but never considered the land war, which involved large scale tank battles and assaults on defended positions. The Soviet and Japanese tanks are also really cool and readily available from Scotia Grendel and Heroics and Ros. I just need to work out company composition and the stats for the Japanese tanks.
Welcome to my blog. I have upwards of 100 projects in various stages of incompletion or total abandonment, so you may well find something of interest if you rummage about a bit. I concentrate on solo air and naval wargaming but other 'skirmishy' things quite often pop up out of nowhere, only to disappear again after something else grabs my attention. I even finish the occasional project now and again!

Very interesting here, Jim!
ReplyDeleteYou’ve certainly jumped in with both feet. I bought the rules (Eastern Front version) and I like what I see. My only complaints so far are 1) I’m primarily a solo gamer and the rules don’t lend themselves easily to solo play (due to the Tactics Chart, but I’m mulling some ideas over for it), and the air strikes seem a bit weak (the ability to get one only via a ‘Command’ action and then needing a 9+ to get them, and then only rolling on the non-penetrating hits table), though I should play them as written first just to make sure, I feel like I’d prefer them to be a bit more dramatic.
And then the fact I don’t have 30 of any one type of tank lying around in any scale, and daydreaming of putting in a massive order with either PicoArmor or Heroics and Ros to dial up several theaters at once.
V/R,
Jack
That's why I opted for 3mm / 1/600th scale..much quicker and cheaper to get started. I may well scale up to 1/300th scale later on. I also play solo but don't think it will be a problem.
ReplyDeleteJim,
Delete“ That's why I opted for 3mm / 1/600th scale..much quicker and cheaper to get started. I may well scale up to 1/300th scale later on.”
Certainly, and your 3mm stuff is looking fantastic so far!
“I also play solo but don't think it will be a problem.”
So how are you handling the Tactics Chart? I’m thinking specifically of the situation when it’s pretty obvious what I want to do and the ‘enemy’ commander needs to pick between what he wants to do and what he could do to stop me from doing what I want to do (by selecting a square that isn’t particularly useful to him but will block me from doing something to him), and how often to go after Command Action and/or Initiative.
I’ve been thinking about having an enemy commander ‘personality,’ I.e., conservative, aggressive, measured, etc…, that would govern his stance on those things, maybe with a weighted die roll so it’s a bit more unpredictable, but I’m wary of slowing it down too much.
V/R,
Jack
Hi Jack,
ReplyDeleteHere's a solution for solo play that a chap on the FB group devised:
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BZBV4KNZj/
Like the idea of personality...very much in a Nordic Weasel style.
I’ll take a look at that, thanks!

Very much in the Jack style! ;)
