Summer Holiday Project Re-Think

I've been debating whether or not the IABSM 15mm project is the best option for the holidays, mainly due to the vast number of plastic figures and vehicles that I'd need to assemble, let alone eventually paint. As an alternative, I've been considering the other 15mm WW2 project that I set out a few months ago, namely to re-purpose my Peter Pig 15mm lead pile for Chain of Command.

These figures were originally intended for IABSM but, now that I've switched to Battlefront and PSC for that, they are surplus to requirements. The idea is to use them for Chain of Command, initially assembling a late war British unit with various support elements, to represent a platoon of the 5th Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and tanks of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry or 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards.

This is all I'd need to base and paint for the 5th DCLI

I had a 20mm Rapid Fire! equivalent of this ages ago and have always wanted to pick it up where I left off, only in 15mm this time around. I'd also build a corresponding German platoon, possibly of Volksgrenadiers rather than standard infantry, as the plan would be to set up skirmish scenarios based around actions in Holland and the Rhineland in late 1944 to early 1945.

It's just an ideas at the moment but it would be a lot more manageable than the IABSM option?

  1. Interested to see this develop as I have Peter Pig 15mm for CoC, but as yet unpainted and for Western Desert.

  2. It's a theatre I'm interested in too, especially after reading the great game reports from gamers using the CoC mini campaigns like KG von Luck and Operation Martlet. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  3. Well, an army for "Chain of Command" can grow into an army for IABSM later ;-)

  4. They'd be individually based so I was thinking of doubling up for Five Men at Kursk! (with my IABSM stuff useable for
    Company Command too)

    1. What're you up to, Jim? I saw your post on TMP for simple Company-level rules; of course I'd recommend 5Core Company Command, and if that's not fast paced/quick enough, change from 5 Men in Normandy-style activation to 5 Men at Kursk style.

  5. Hi Jack,

Yes, Fivecore Company Command is definitely up there as one of the three potential rules that I could use for the 15mm project.

I also still very much want to do small 15mm skirmish games using No End In Sight for post-colonial British and French retreat from empire skirmishes, but that's a whole different ball game!

    Good to hear from you.

    1. Jim,

Sure, I was just curious where you're trying to fit this in? It looks like you decided to forgo IABSM in favor of CoC, so what's the ask for about some simple company-level rules?

On a side note, I think I'm going to try 5Core Company Command at reinforced platoon level, just call a stand a fireteam rather than a squad.

I love NEI and now Combat Patrol, but the games are still running long. This conversion may hit the spot for faster games with a set I'm already super comfortable with.

It's funny, just this morning I was gazing dejectedly at a group of French and Vietminh that are primed but unpainted...

      V/R,
      Jack

  6. Just testing the waters for when I do eventually get round to company level games, now that Ive got a shedload of plastic figures and tanks from PSC, not to mention stuff for the Ardennes in metal. Probably never happen!?

    1. Hell, the way you turn out new troops and vehicles, you should be able to do battalion level by next week! ;)
