Royal Navy Pre-Dreadnoughts

I've almost finished assembling and basing my core squadron of French pre-dreadnoughts, so I thought I'd start on the other half of the project with the Royal Navy equivalent. I've left the French coastal battleships for later and will add some more ships to the French fleet once they arrive in the post, so it's now a good time to crack on with the British.

The core of the Royal Navy squadron is four Royal Sovereign class battleships and HMS Hood, together with the armoured cruiser HMS Edgar and couple of Apollo class light cruisers. I will add more to this starting force later but it's a good basis for a patrol sweep in the English Channel. It's also a good match for my French pre-dreadnoughts, even if they are slightly outnumbered.

I'm limiting all of my ships for this project to the pre-Entente Cordiale period c1885-1899, so it's a pretty tight time frame but one which allows for some really interesting and exciting warships, especially as it's the transition period from barbettes to turrets. I'm looking forward to assembling these, as they are a bit less fiddly than the French but will be good fun to paint.

  1. Good stuff. With the earlier period you also get to paint the vessels in their Victorian splendour instead of that dreary grey.
