The Ascari blows up! Kaboom! |
I played the scenario that I wrote for Find, Fix and Strike today, based on the real Battle of Sidon in 1941 but relocated north to the coast of Syria in June 1938. I'll write a blow-by-blow after action report later but, suffice to say, it was an action-packed, cut and thrust game in which the French ultimately triumphed but after a stiff fight from the Italians.
The most dramatic moment was in the penultimate turn when the French destroyer Le Malin fired a close range salvo at the lightly damaged Italian destroyer Ascari, which promptly blew up (at least that's how I explained a four to one attack to defence ratio and a damage result of Sink). The French used the evade rule to great effect and managed to make a successful escape, albeit with Le Terrible heavily damaged, while the Italians had one destroyer silenced and another sunk.
The rules worked really well for this level of action and I even scored some torpedo hits, using my slightly tweaked odds, although there were also a lot of misses. I have a couple of queries to iron out in the torpedo attack mechanism, specifically the damage resolution bit, but otherwise it was all plain sailing. I'll definitely be running some more destroyer actions in the future, as I really enjoyed this one!
