I was lucky enough to be invited to sit in with an online game of Strength and Honour by Mark Backhouse, the author of the soon to be published rules. This was a big clash between an Armenian army and a Roman one, so not too far removed from my Parthian Wars project, with lots of cataphracts up against the assembled Roman legions. I could have joined in earlier but was unable to start from the beginning, so just watched the game unfold, missing the last bit as it was getting late.
It was really interesting to see how some of the mechanisms worked and the way that good, or bad dice rolls made the game play very unpredictable, forcing the players to have to rethink their tactics and adding an element of randomness to the flow of the game. In the end, the Romans were victorious with the Armenians routed from the field, which was by no means a forgone conclusion from the point at which I joined the game.
It was clearly a very enjoyable game and reminded me of the club games I've had in the past where everyone came away feeling they'd had a laugh, even if they got thrashed. Thanks again to Mark for the invite. I'm now really looking forward to the rules being published in April, by which time I should have my Parthian army up an running, ready to take on Trajan's expeditionary forces. If I can, I may even try to squeeze in some revolting Judeans?
