I was in Cardiff this time last week and while browsing the arcades I found a shop selling a range of games and models, including the latest box set of Battletech.
I played a bit of this back in university days, using the old rules and cardboard counters, so the new edition grabbed my attention. The starter box set comes with eight very nice plastic mech models, way better than the cardboard ones and as good, if not better than the white metal models you could get back in the day.
The rules themselves don't seem to be radically different from the original version, with hex movement, weapons loadouts and heat management as key features. The price tag was quite steep for the starter set, so I shopped around and got a good deal with Zatu Games, with the package arriving on my doorstep today, next day delivery not being very expensive at all.
This will be an extra holiday game to play with my eldest over the summer, so a good excuse to relive my student gaming days. In the longer term, if he likes the system, I'm hoping we might expand the core set with some additional models and have some linked games, perhaps even starting a small campaign. In the meantime, I'll be posting some game reports over on the other blog.
