Saladins....in Honduras!?

Is that the Presidents lawn?
Very tasteful camouflage.

There's more than one!

That would be fun to paint!

I've been reading around the subject of the Football War and have been digging about for background information on the armed forces of Honduras and El Salvador as a result. Much to my surprise, I stumbled across these press photos of a Honduran Saladin. I thought that the last of these 1960's heavy armoured cars had been sent to the junkyard, to military museums or to private collectors years ago, but apparently they are still soldiering on in Latin America.

I suspect that anything armoured and armed with more than a heavy machine gun is a game changer and therefore worth hanging on to? It's all a bit AK47:Republic, which reminds me that I haven't had a game of that for ages. It also reminds me of my on-going post-colonial 15mm skirmish ideas, which I really should re-visit at some point in the next few months. I wonder if I could do a retreat from Empire 'Imaginations' themed project in 1960's Central America...now there's an idea?

  1. The mountain troops in Peru still use mules, nothing surprises me about Latin America!

  2. Hi J,

I am sure I read somewhere that one side or the other still had some WW2 vintage Stuart light tanks in service.

    All the best,

  3. Yes that was the Salvadoran army. The Ecuadorian army had no armour so the M3's miget as well have been Tigers!

  4. Jim,
Latin American armies (and air forces + navies for that matter) are a bit of a thing of mine.
The Central American forces are particularly interesting; I have very useful little book on their armour. There were a lot of home grown conversions of trucks and even M114 (the U.S. scout vehicle). It even has some organisation details.
I toyed with some Latin American "Imagi-Nations" a few years back. It's a fertile area as no-one usually knows what they are equipped with in reality!

  5. That's exactly what I was thinking Neil...loads of scope for all sorts of interesting kit and some eminently suitable figures in 15mm from Peter Pig. In fact, one of my existing AK47 armies would be perfect, especially as I painted them to look 'Cuban' :O)
