Running the Gauntlet

No.104 Squadron IAF DH9's

The next scenario for the 'Raben's Ravens' scenario project is once again set in early June 1918, with a flight of DH9 light bombers of No.104 Squadron, Independent Air Force, running the gauntlet of Jasta 18 on a sortie to bomb the railyards at Karthaus in the Rhineland. This was one of the first bombing raids by the Independent Air Force and makes a good basis for a scenario that is easy to play but still challenging for both sides.

The scenario pits five lumbering Airco DH9's in a defensive formation, being intercepted by five Fokker DVII's of Jasta 18 on the outward flight to the target. The DH9's were subsequently diverted to a secondary target at Metz-Sablon after one of the bombers was shot down, although all four remaining aircraft eventually made in back to their airfield.

In this game, the DH9 crews will have to fly the length of the table while the Fokker DVII pilots try to cut out individual aircraft and pull the formation to shreds. It's a relatively simple set up but I'm aiming to include some special rules for air gunners, akin to those in Bag the Hun, to up the firepower of the bomber flight, while giving the Jasta 18 player a realistic chance of shooting down at least one of the bombers. Raben Raus!

'Baer's Really Bad Day' Play Test Card Deck

Another card deck for the 'Raben's Ravens' scenario project, this time for the second scenario which has a much smaller deck than the previous one. Once again I've kept it very simple as the deck is only for play testing purposes and doesn't need to be in colour. You'll notice there are no formation move cards, blinds or Tally Ho! / Flying Circus! cards this time, as the action begins after the formations had already engaged in combat and had been spotted. This one will be a bit different as a result, with the Jasta 18 pilots at a distinct advantage, at least to start with, just as in the actual dogfight. I've deliberately only focussed on part of the action to limit the number of aircraft involved and to keep this a really tight game. The proof will be very much in the play testing!

'Digger Dogfight' Aircraft Record Sheets

I did a quick bit of editing on the aircraft record sheets that are available to download from the Storm of Steel site yesterday, adding new pictures for the 'Digger Dogfight' scenario as well as pilot names and rankings, although these are not on the examples above. It's really handy not to have to work up my own sheets for a change, having designed the ones for Bag the Hun which now get used a lot by other players. The stats on these ones are based on the revised and extended lists for Algernon Pulls It Off! and I was tempted to edit them back to the original versions from the rules, but instead will just keep them as they are. I'm not sure why the numbers were changed, particularly the reduction in fire factors, but there must be a good reason so I'll go with it.

Black Thursday

Lt.Lagesse shoots down Ltn.d.R.Schultz

The third scenario for the Algernon Pulls It Off! Raben's Ravens project has now been drafted, based on a dogfight on 6th June 1918. In this action, five Fokker DVII's pounced on a patrol of six SE5a scouts of No.29 Squadron, RAF, but got more than they bargained for. The RAF veterans shot down two of the Jasta 18 machines for no loss including one of their leading aces, Ltn.Mendel.

In this scenario, not only are the Jasta 18 pilots slightly outnumbered, they are also up against two RAF junior aces, Lt.Lagesse and Lt.Ross, who both made ace on the same day. Although most of the pilots on both sides are veterans, this will still be a tough game for the Germans to win, given the parity of experience and skill, together with a slight edge in performance for the Fokker DVII. Tally Ho!

'Digger Dogfight' Play Test Card Deck

Some of No.4 Squadron's cards

Some of Jasta 18's cards

I did a quick bit of card deck design work this afternoon to knock together the various cards for the Digger Dogfight scenario, using WORD for ease of use and keeping the graphics to a minimum. The cards are black and white to save on the colour printing. These are just for play testing so don't need to be flashy and have the advantage that they can easily be edited or enhanced at a later date, with better imagery and some colour. I now just need to modify a couple of record sheets from my Bag the Hun files to be ready for a play test game or two later in the week. Tally Ho!

Baer's Really Bad Day

1st Lt. Paul Baer

103rd Aero Squadron USAS Combat Log Extract

Baer's SPAD VII

The second scenario in the Jasta 18 'Raben's Ravens' set has now been drafted, with research based on some primary and secondary sources of evidence. This scenario features a dogfight between a pair of experienced Jasta 18 pilots and three American aviators of the 103rd Aero Squadron, no sprogs themselves but definitely the underdogs in this instance. Two of the three were shot down after being 'bounced' by a top cover flight in a well-planned ambush, with 1st Lt.Paul Baer, an ace pilot and veteran of the Lafayette Escadrille being wounded and captured as a PoW. The scenario is written and now just needs to be play tested, once I get round to finding some 1/600th scale SPAD VII and XIII scouts, unless I go down the 1/300th route sooner rather than later?

More 1/300th WW1 3D Printed Planes

I needed some two seater aircraft for the later scenarios in the Jasta 18 project, so contacted Paul at Sabotage3D to put in an order. To round it off, he suggested adding some single seater scouts, so rather than more late war aircraft, I ordered some DH2 and Albatros DII scouts for late 1916 - early 1917. I've also ordered some more decals from Dan at Flight Deck, which means I will have everything ready to go when I move on to painting these up for Algernon Pulls It Off! and for other rules, including Airwar:1918 and Spandau and Lewis.

Move / Fire - Fire / Move in Bag the Hun and Algy

I had a bit of an epiphany this afternoon while walking the dog in the rain and thinking about how to speed up play in both Bag the Hun and Algernon Pulls It Off!. For years I've been running games of Bag the Hun at the club but almost invariably have at least one player throwing his toys out of the pram when the card deck doesn't turn in his favour. The classic example is when a player moves into a perfect position for a shot but is scuppered when the opposing player gets a move card and immediately slips out of the way. In the past, I've put the players' frustration down to wanting to game the system, 'playing the rules not the game' so to speak, or just wanting to be in total control of events. This has been a problem for me as an umpire on occasions, as some of the players concerned are naturally inclined towards a 'control' frame of mind, for various perfectly legitimate reasons.

However, it does raise the question of how to avoid situations that are difficult to rationalise with some people or that spoil what is otherwise a very historically resonant system. I'd already been thinking about how to square this circle by changing the way the card deck worked, one idea being to remove the umpire and distribute most of the cards to the players, who would then deploy them in order of initiative based on pilot skill. This would give players a lot more control over the turn sequence and allow them to reserve their move / fire cards for the most opportune moment. The altitude and formation bonus cards would be in a pool that could be dipped into by players as and when they were activating their flights, sections or schwarms. This idea has all sorts of potential complications but might be worth pursuing further, although it would completely change the system.

Today I had a better idea (I think?). This would be to amalgamate the section move and section fire cards into one dual card, giving the option to move and then fire or to fire and then move. This would not only halve the card deck in one fell swoop, speeding up each turn and the whole game, but also hand more control over from the umpire to the individual players. In Algy it would be even more useful, as there are a lot more move and fire cards involved, limiting the number of aircraft and slowing down the pace of the game. I think this would be a significant improvement to the 'flow' of both Bag the Hun and Algernon Pulls It Off! without fundamentally changing the dynamics of the system. It would also help to avoid the player meltdowns that I have occasionally had to deal with when things don't go according to their cunning plans!

I'd be very interested in your thoughts about this idea, if you think it would work or if it would throw a  ruddy great spanner in the works?

Raben's Ravens Scenario One: Digger Dogfight

I've now written the initial draft of the first scenario in the 'Raben's Ravens' series, which focusses on Jasta18 in the five months between May and September 1918. As previously mentioned, the first scenario is based on a dogfight on the 4th May 1918 with five Sopwith Camels of  No.4 Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps. The scenario has a total of ten aircraft, which is quite a lot in Algernon Pulls It Off! given that each pilot has it's own fire and move cards, in addition to any character cards and bonus cards. One nice touch was to rename the Tally Ho! card as 'Bung on a Blue' and the 'Flying Circus Card' as 'Raben Raus!', which I thought would give the deck a bit more flavour?

To stop the game running on too long I have limited it to ten turns, but only a couple of play test games will reveal if this keeps turn duration  and game length down to a manageable level. I'm estimating about two hours, give or take, assuming the first couple of turns are taken in formation. I've almost finished the 1/600th Sopwith Camel models for this scenario, so hope to play test it solo at some point next week, before possibly taking it to the club. It's a simple 'dogfight' with no blinds or other complications, so it should be easy to play solo for the first games.

The Mercian Chronicles

I was given a book token for my birthday a few weeks ago and, while browsing in Waterstones, I decided to use it to buy a new hardback copy of Max Adam's book on Offa of Mercia. It covers a lot more than that to be fair, going all the way back to Penda and forward to the ascendancy of the West Saxon kings, so very much worth getting hold of. I'll be reading it in the Easter holidays when I'm off to France again.

Jasta 18 Tumbling Dice 1/600th Scale Scouts

I'm back from my self imposed internet exile and feeling a bit more focussed than before, which is a good thing. Here's the completed Jasta 18 squadron of late war fighters, with the upper wing decals added, ready for play testing some Algy scenarios. I cut corners by not adding the tail insignia but may go back and sort that out later. I'm going to focus on finishing the remaining RAF aircraft now, as well as writing up the first of the scenarios for play testing. I am also going to make a start on at least some of the 1/300th scale 3D printed aircraft that I ordered from Paul at Sabotage3D, as they look fantastic and are crying out for a splash of paint.

Taking a Break

I've just been away in Plymouth for the weekend visiting the family. While staying in a local pub with a very good view of naval goings on, I also discovered a display of large scale coastal forces models in the nearby stately home at Mount Edgecombe. I've been really struggling to find my wargaming motivation of late, so these were a boost to my flagging enthusiasm. I'm now going to focus on finishing the 1/600th scale WW1 aircraft then clear the decks and take a break from wargaming for a while. I need a bit of time away from the workbench to rethink why I'm doing this and what I need to focus on in order to enjoy it, as I now predominantly do wargaming solo rather than at the club.

Spad XIII vs Fokker DVII

At least two of the scenarios I'm working on for the Jasta 18 Algernon Pulls It Off project involve USAS Spad XIII pursuit squadrons, so this book will be the latest source of information that I will be using to fill in the details. The cover is based on a famous dogfight in early September 1918 between the 13th Aero Squadron and Jasta Raben, that will be the focus of one of my scenarios, so it should be a really valuable reference when drafting the play test version.

43rd Wessex Division Memorial

Driving down the A303 to Plymouth today, so stopped off for some lunch in Mere. I'd been past this town hundreds of times but never thought of stopping, mainly because it's only an hour from home. The lunch was nice but even better, I discovered the memorial to the 43rd Wessex Division, which is located at the top of the castle overlooking the town. The actual castle was dismantled after the fifteenth century, no doubt to provide building stone for the locals, but the earthworks are still impressive. There was also a small memorial to the US Third Armoured Division which trained on Salisbury Plain before D Day.

Digger Dogfight

I've been working away on the research for the first scenario in the Raben's Ravens project, which features an evenly matched dogfight on 4th May 1918 between a 'kette' of Abatros DVa scouts of Jasta 18 and a flight of Sopwith Camels from No.4 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. The Australian War Memorial archives are a gold mine of useful documentation including the squadron record book for May 1918, which has provided the probable identities of the pilots involved, alongside research based on my existing collection of books and reference sources. I think I have everything I need to write up the scenario for play testing, perhaps even by the end of the half term holidays, so I'm going to get cracking to get 'Digger Dogfight' completed.
