Gaslands Refuelled

I have been suckered into ordering the new expanded edition of Gaslands, aptly titled Gaslands: Refuelled, partly due to some positive online reviews but mostly because I fancy some toy car kit bashing. I have the original rules and all the various templates but never played more than a couple of games, so I'm hoping this expanded version will fire me up to try some more. I've actually got a credit as a first edition play tester somewhere but it's hardly deserved!

One of my old Hot Wheels conversions

I ordered my copy from Northstar as it includes a bonus sprue of weapons, stowage and armour for conversions, which looks like it will be very useful. The plan will be to hi-jack a rainy weekend in the next couple of months to bash together some new post-apocalyptic, Mad Max style battlewagons, using a stockpile of Hot Wheels that I've salvaged from the kid's old toy box. Who knows, maybe it will get them unglued from the X-Box once they've realised what happened to the old toy cars?

Gaslands Auto Combat Terrain

I had forgotten about Gaslands until I spotted these card print and play accessories on Wargames Vault this morning, some of which were on special half price discount. I've downloaded the three sets of terrain designed for Hotwheels scale gaming, together with a couple of the scaleable sci-fi pieces including a control tower and cargo containers. All very useful as structures to crash into, drive over or otherwise blow up!

Unfortunately my printer isn't up to the job, so I'll have to wait to get these printed on card at the local printing shop, which may not happen for a while. This lot set me back about seven quid, which is pretty good considering that I can now print off as many terrain pieces as I want and in numerous different schemes. It will also save me ages scratch building the same bits and pieces out of plastic card and scrap stuff.

Ramshackle Conversion Pack

It's pay day so I have splashed out on a pack of 20mm conversion bits for diecast toy cars from Ramshackle Games. I'm not keen on the over sized 40K style guns but the drivers, ram plates, turrets and missile pods should be very useful. 

Gaslands Gangs

I've been rummaging about for various 'stuff' to use as conversion material for diecast toy cars, so that I can put together a second 'gang' for Gaslands and Axles and Alloys. I already have half a dozen Hotwheels and Matchbox conversions, all of which are based on supercar or muscle car models rather than Mad Max style post-apocalyptic off road wrecks. The new 'gang' or team will be much more along those lines, using 50's style pick ups and coupes with loads of added stowage, armour and improvised rams, roll bars and spiky bits, along with some serious offensive weaponry. In the meantime, I'm going to practice dismantling and rebuilding an old Matchbox AMX Pro Stocker racing car into a Mad Max style interceptor.

Blotz Gas Station and Diner

I thought I'd invest in a small number of 20mm scale scenic features to tart up my desert terrain for use with Gaslands and other post-apocalyptic car combat games like Axles and Alloys II. There's not a lot out there in 20mm but this petrol station and diner looked like it would be suitable, once I bash it about a bit and paint it up as a derelict road side stop. I also bought some road block barriers to use by what's left of local law enforcement, so I've made a good start already.

The lady wife has been very nice and has allowed me to pre-order the Gaslands rules, counters, markers and dice bundle as an early Xmas present. It's not out until the end of the month anyway, so will be wrapped up when it arrives in suitably festive paper, although I will sneak a look beforehand. This means that some games are on the cards next year, especially as I already have some die-cast cars converted to use and plenty of desert scenery for them to drive through and blow up. I'll be adding to my modest collection of post-apocalyptic vehicles too, as I have a stash of suitable toys just waiting to be souped up into Mad Max style off road cars, trucks and bikes.

At the club, however, some of the chaps did do some playtesting and used the pre-release beta version of the rules for a successful participation game at Warfare this time last year. Wessex Wargamers Winchester Warfare 2016 Game

This year I'm not involved in the club participation game for Warfare at the weekend, as I just have too much on my plate at work. However, I will be going to the show with No2 son on Saturday, so hope to join in and play a couple of games. The game this year is a car wars style automotive post-apocalypse race across the wastelands, using some of my diecast cars that I converted years ago for Axles and Alloys alongside other club member's vehicles. The rules are a streamlined version of Gaslands, which is currently in development for Osprey Publishing. It should be a fun game and I'm looking forward to being on the other side of the table for a change!

Red Planet Terrain Mat

I spotted this bargain today on TMP, a £10 discount offer on Deepcut Studios red planet terrain mats over at the Big Red Bat Cave web shop thingy. As it's Friday and I have had a very, very heavy week, I thought 'I could do with one of those!' and promptly bunged in an order. It works out at a little over £40 for a 6' x 4' mat including First Class postage, so a pretty good deal.

I'm not sure what I'll use it for but initial thoughts are for 15mm Sci Fi, which is one of my projects for this year, along with some Post Apocalypse Mad Max style games using 28mm Copplestone Future Wars figures and 1/43rd scale die-cast toy car conversions. I could also have a go at using it for Fistful of Lead: Reloaded, although it's probably a bit too extra-terrestrial to look quite right?

Post Apocalyse Big Rig

I've been looking for suitable die cast Hot Wheels toys to convert into post- apocalypse vehicles for Gaslands over the last couple of days. I already have some muscle cars that I've converted and painted but would like to have some more Mad Max style cars and trucks, complete with add on armour and spikey bits. Although I have already stockpiled a load of 50's style Hot Wheels for just such a thing, I have been struggling to find a suitable big rig truck and trailer, until now.

A trip to the local toy shop yesterday turned up this beast of a truck, complete with yet another hot rod car for the convoy escort. The conversion potential is obvious and I'm thinking of adding side armour sheets to the trailer for a start, together with some gun platforms or turrets. The cab with also get some add-on armour plating, a ram plate and some sort of forward firing heavy armament. I just need to get all the bits together and it's off to the chop shop for some welding!

Gaslands

I've signed up to playtest these post-apocalypse car combat rules which will be published by Osprey in 2017. The beta rules look very straightforward but I'm sure that there will be more layers added to the core mechanisms as they develop. I'm now off to the loft to dig out the dusty box of Hot Wheels muscle cars that I converted to use with Axles and Alloys way back when I last went for a spin. This looks like it will be a lot of fun and I can make use of my growing collection of wild west desert terrain to drive around in:
