From our military correspondent on the Mbote - Zubuto border
In a rapid mobilisation of military force, the Zubuto Army of the People, supported by local militia units of the Peoples Volunteer Army, has occupied the border zone adjacent to Mbote, taking control of strategic crossing points on the Wanayani river.
Advanced units of tanks, armoured personnel carriers and armoured car reconnaissance teams have massed on the front lines. In a brief press statement, Major Attak, commander of the ZAP troops, rejected claims of an imminent invasion of Mbote.
'Our forces are on a pre-planned training exercise. They are engaged in peaceful and entirely harmless manoeuvres. Our armour and self propelled artillery are merely practicing a deployment, in order to test the cross country ability of our tip top tanks. Our elite para commando troops are on a nature awareness course, studying local flora and fauna to avoid environmental harm when firing their heavy weapons, in the approximate but unintentional direction of Mbote.'
