I thought I'd pulled off a bit of a blinder the other day when I found a seller on eBay with some supposedly 28mm Zulu style shields for sale. These would be great to kit out some Tuta allied spearmen I concluded, so I sent off for a couple of packs. When they arrived, however, they turned out to be more like 15mm or 18mm, so I was a bit miffed to say the least. A quick rethink ensued and I realised they would make excellent disorder markers for Death in the Dark Continent instead! A bit of a result and crisis duly averted, if I say so myself.
Small they may be, but nicely sculpted nonetheless. Great crisis management.
ReplyDeleteThey are very nice 👍
ReplyDeleteNguni shields did come in a variety of sizes. The Zulus had a big battle shield (isihlangu) about 5 feet tall and a smaller battle shield (umbumbuluzo) about 3 feet. I can't be sure from the picture but those shields look like they could well scale to around 3 feet in 28mm so might be okay. Having said that the really big Zulu shields do look cooler in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYes I did think about using them, perhaps cutting them down and sanding off the stitching, then equipping some skirmishers with them as light shields. They are a bit small though and look a bit odd next to the very large Ngoni shields.
