This new set of WW2 naval rules from Rory Crabb was on half price sale at Wargames Vault the other day, so I downloaded a copy for potential use with my 1/3000 scale French fleet. I have been reading through the rules and they look pretty good, with an emphasis on fast play and simple mechanics. They are based on his Naval Command modern rules, which have a solid following.
I was impressed by the simplified aircraft rules in particular and by the straightforward approach to submarines, both of which are usually fairly complicated and complex elements of naval rule systems. I also liked the fact that the core rules are only about thirty pages long, with the rest of the pages taken up with guidelines and extensive ship lists - including the French.
There are a few avoidable typos but I'm sure these will be cleaned up in updates and errata. All in all, I think these might be another good option alongside Naval Thunder and Victory at Sea, the latter being the default that I've used to date, albeit with less than total enthusiasm. As I'm not at the club much these days, all I need now is an Italian or British or even a Japanese fleet to take on the French?
Hmm, thanks for the tip.
