June 1870,
A powerful force of French ironclads attempts to break through the blockade of Brest under cover of a summer squall. Driven into the Bay of Audierne by the gale, the French ironclad fleet is intercepted by a squadron of Royal Navy ironclad warships, closing from the South to cut off their escape. The Royal Navy are outnumbered two to one and close to shore there is the ever present danger of running aground...can their superior seamanship win the day or will the French break free and live to fight another day?
I'll be playing out this scenario for Broadside and Ram tomorrow, if all goes according to plan, so will be posting another after action report when I've finished. The French objective is to get at least half of their ships undamaged off the Southern end of the table, with any other result being a British victory.
I'll be running this solo so will see how well I can manage all twelve ships and three squadrons at a go? I'm looking forward to it and, in particular, how the rules for shallows and running aground might make for some desperate, last ditch action! Here are the record sheets for all three squadrons:
