I've finished off the planes for Bag the Hun so I can now get back to the ironclad projects, with the US North Atlantic Squadron ready to paint, give or take a couple more monitors that I need to convert. While that's going on, I'm starting to do the scratch building and conversion work to create a squadron of ironclads for the Russian Baltic fleet. This involves a fair bit of cutting up, chopping, filing down and filling in, using various Tumbling Dice models as a starting point.
Uragan Class Monitors (1864)
These were very similar to the Passaic class monitors, which I've converted from the USS Dictator model (ASV54) but I'll be using the USS Kalamazoo models from the same pack in order to avoid wasting them. A cut and shut job.
Charodeika Class Monitors (1867)
I'm going to have a go at converting the HMS Cyclops model (ASV40), adding masts and possibly extending the hull. Easy enough.
Admiral Lazarov Class Monitors (1867)
I'll use the Javary (ASV63) which is very similar in design but will need another turret added amidships and some surgery to the top to make it look right. Pretty straightforward.
Pervenetz Class Floating Batteries (1863-65)
These will be converted from the Armide (ASV45) with green stuff and plastic card to model the ram bow and tumblehome. A bit more work involved to do this conversion.
Sevastopol Class Ironclad Frigates (1864-65)
These will be heavily converted from the Solferino (ASV42) with cut down hulls and modified bows, requiring a lot of cutting, sanding and remodelling. A big job.
Piotr Veliki Class Turret Ship (1876)
I have a spare HMS Devastation (ASV37) that I could use to do this but it will be a pain to do and might not be worth the effort, especially as it is a relatively late commission.
I have some more ideas for other ironclads including the Kniaz Pozharskii, Minin and Novgorod that I could add to the squadron but this is more than enough for the moment.
