While waiting for the undercoat to dry on the 2mm pike and shot units today, I had a play around with some Antonine Miniatures 2mm blocks and 50mm x 30mm bases. I thought this combination would work for the Portable Ancient Wargame rules, which can be stretched to cover the early Middle Ages. I had a go at some Anglo Saxon shield wall units and Norman cavalry, infantry and missile bases, which seemed to work well. I also tried to organise some Ancient British chariot, horde and skirmish bases, together with some Imperial Roman units. I think this might be a good way to create armies for very little time, cost or effort, using my terrain from the English Civil War project and leftover bits from my Strength and Honour project...although I remain to be convinced.
Most of the infantry are fine (although my preference is still for Irregular Miniatures 2mm fellas) but some of the Antonine “barbarian horde” castings are not to my taste. I imagine hordes of barbarians being relatively clumped together (for protection? keeping close-by to their friends, tribal group etc) but some of those bases just look odd to me. The chariots, cavalry and elephants also have a rather chunky look.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, I prefer my 2mm castings to have widths of 20mm or 40mm maximum, so they can fit onto DBx bases with 40mm frontage.
Cheers,
Geoff
I agree about the horde castings. I've tried all sorts of configurations with those for Strength and Honour but they just don't look right. That's one of the reasons I thought of using them individually for this. On the other hand, I've seen Mark Backhouse's Antonine units up close and he works magic with them - his Sarmations are fabulous. I have been converted to Irregular's stuff too...loads of character and not too hard to paint up.
