I've just finished reading this excellent book on the Sino Japanese naval war. It is packed with wargaming inspiration and full of photographs, maps and illustrations, as well as well researched and well written explanation of the various naval battles. I was particularly interested in the chapter on the Japanese night time torpedo boat attacks on the Chinese Peiyang fleet in Weiheiwei, which would be a brilliant wargaming scenario and could be easily adapted to other pre-dreadnought conflicts or even to other periods entirely.
I took part in a 1/3000 scale wargame of the Battle of the Yalu years ago but I seem to remember that I didn't do very much, being in command of one of the more obsolete and peripheral parts of the Japanese fleet. However, I'm seriously tempted to get a Tumbling Dice 1/2400th scale Chinese starter pack now, but will have to do my best to resist. I also have the author's books on the Russo Japanese, Sino French and Russo Turkish naval wars, so I'll be digging into one or two of those as well over the next month or so. Highly recommended!
So many interesting naval encounters in that period.
