This is my proposed line up for the Royal Navy task force for the Indonesian Confrontation 'What If?' project, although there are still a couple of ships missing and perhaps a few too many already? I did originally have HMS Tiger in her helicopter cruiser configuration but decided to leave her out as she was only converted in 1969, so too late for the conflict. The Leander Class frigates are also a bit of a push but are just about in time to be included, while the one Salisbury and two Rothesay class FF's aren't a problem. I've chosen to mainly include named warships that were operational during the conflict but also added some that weren't, as it's a 'What If?' scenario and I have some leeway to be creative.
I really would like to have some of the modernised 'Ca' class frigates, a couple of RAN Daring class destroyers and HMS Tiger in her pre-modernised format, but they will have to wait. The fixed wing aircraft are for HMS Eagle's wing, although the Buccaneers should and will probably be swapped out for Scimitars given the timeframe. Four of the Wessex Commando choppers will be allocated to HMS Albion and two for the County Class destroyers. The Wasps are obviously destined for the frigates. It's quite a lot to get tidied up, based and painted but I'm thinking of changing my approach to a base then undercoat and paint method, which I'm hoping might speed things up a bit?
Lenders are fine, I think at least one was involved in the "Konfrontazi". You really need a Tiger - those automatic 6" guns will make a mess of the Irian :D SBW ran a Konfrontazi campaign at the NWS some years ago with an authentic OOB. I'll see if I can find the details (oh and yo can have Type 14s as well)
ReplyDeleteYes I realised that I needed the Tiger in the original configuration, after getting the helicopter carrier version, which I wanted to have as my neighbours dad when I was a kid served on HMS Blake as a Lt Commander (engineering)
DeleteOh, and Buccs are OK on Victorious from 1963
ReplyDeleteI'm going to use HMS Eagle as my CVA having sailed around her in the Hamoaze with my grandad back in the late 70's.
DeleteAlthough Victorious would be an impressive extra..and put the wind up the Indonesians
DeleteBuccs are ok for Eagle at this time as well
DeleteThanks David
DeleteThinking about it more, another interesting RN ship you can include is Manxman, She was quite active, I spent some time working with a naval captain who was on board as a junior officer during the Confrontation. He told some interesting and quite gory stories about their various missions intercepting terrorist boats
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea! I'm going to have another look at the Navwar lists for some 1950's modernised stuff to add to the fleet.
DeleteMiniature Wargames No.195 August 1999 has a RN/Indonesian mini campaign called Singapore or Bust. Set in 1964.
